directory or sub-directory:  In DOS, Linux, and UNIX, a directory is a logical, user-defined division of a storage device.  For example, a user may divide a hard disk into several directories, with each directory used to store files that pertain to a certain task.  One directory may contain programs and documents for word processing, another for spreadsheet analysis, and another for database manipulation.  Newer operating systems use the word folder synonomously with directory.
